Airborne delivery is rarely the whole solution. A successful relief operation normally depends on airport handling, customs clearance, warehousing, transport planning and local distribution. The final journey may still require trucks, boats, motorcycles, community health workers or other local transport.
The value of airborne logistics is that it can shorten or bypass the most difficult part of that chain. A plane can move a large quantity of supplies over long distances, while helicopters or drones can sometimes reach locations that are inaccessible by road.
Technology and the future
Drones and improved logistics software are expanding the options available to humanitarian organisations. However, airborne delivery still requires appropriate regulation, safe operating conditions, trained teams and reliable handover arrangements on the ground.
